Toni Erdmann
Germany's Best Foreign Language nominee in this year's Oscar race, TONI ERDMANN, is a one-of-a-kind father-daughter story that hits all the right notes - raw, painful, awkward, and laugh-out-loud funny - and is one of 2016's the most memorable films.
The Germans are funny?
It turns out they are, and the long-awaited third film from Maren Ade (EVERYONE ELSE) proves it. Toni Erdmann isn’t even a real character in TONI ERDMANN, rather it’s an alter ego of Winfried Conradi (Peter Simonischek), an aging free spirit and prankster who loves to pull jokes just to make himself laugh.
Armed with a unique sense of humor and a set of novelty bad teeth, Winfried travels from Germany to Bucharest to spend time with his driven, career-minded daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller) and mend their damaged relationship. Along the way, he pretends to be a business coach and insinuates himself into Ines’ life with hilarious results that involve whoopie cushions, naked parties and more.
A mix of the slow burn humor of discomfort and touching humanity, TONI ERDMANN will leave you gasping for breath from laughter and looking at the world with new eyes.

"TONI ERDMANN pairs carefully constructed, three-dimensional characters in a tenderly funny character study that's both genuinely moving and impressively ambitious." (Rotten Tomatoes)
"TONI ERDMANN is as strange, delightful and dementedly funny as the hype has it. But repeat watching reveals a film that plays first as comedy, then as tragedy." (Sight and Sound)
"A weird, thoughtful, affecting treat." (Empire Magazine)
