I Am Not Your Negro

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, "Remember This House." The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Employing an unconventional narrative approach and poetic style to both the material and its subject matter, filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book Baldwin never finished in this Oscar-nominated documentary that succeeds as a rumination and meditation on the state - past, present, and future - of the reality of race relations in contemporary America. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.

"However much a documentary about American life in the 1960s, I Am Not Your Negro also uses Baldwin’s insights to illuminate our own contemporary reality." (The Atlantic)

"Whatever you think about the past and future of what used to be called “race relations” this movie will make you think again, and may even change your mind." (The New York Times)

"Its biggest strengths are Jackson’s voice and Baldwin’s commentary, which combine to create a distinctively world-weary tone." (AV Club)
