Castle in the Sky (With or w/out Howl's Moving Castle Double Bill)

1:00pm - Monday, May 22, 2017

There is no better way to appreciate the magic of Studio Ghibli than on the big screen! Movie-lovers of all ages will adore this double-bill pairing of two beloved classics from Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli founder and master storyteller Hayao Miyazaki - CASTLE IN THE SKY and HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE. On Monday, May 22 (Victoria Day!) both films will screen in their original Japanese with English subtitles - see one, or see them both!

CASTLE IN THE SKY (1986) is an early masterpiece of storytelling and filmmaking whose imaginative and ornately detailed vision presaged later films like PRINCESS MONONOKE and SPIRITED AWAY. The film follows the story of a young girl with a mysterious crystal pendant who falls out of the sky, and into the arms and life of young Pazu. Together they search for a floating island in the sky, site of a long-dead civilization promising enormous wealth and power to those who can unlock its secrets. HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE (2004) is one of the famed director’s most beloved, a spectacularly visual and highly imaginative feast for the eyes (and soul!). The film follows the story of Sophy, young woman with confidence issues who is cursed with an older body by a spiteful witch. Sophy’s only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions in his legged, walking castle.
