Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

6:30pm - Wednesday, Jun 14, 2017

Iconic director Vittorio De Sica's (THE BICYCLE THIEVES) beloved, Oscar-winning YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW ("Ieri, oggi, domani") is an anthology that's equal parts wit, charm, sweet hilarity; a trilogy of romantic comedies set in different parts of Italy, featuring Italy's greatest on-screen couple, the incomprehensibly luminous Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, in each story. In Naples, poor Adelina supports her husband by selling black market cigarettes. In Milan, wealthy Anna is having an affair with poor Renzo, whose infatuation is tested by a near-tragedy. In Rome, prostitute Mara seeks the help of her client Augusto to spurn the advances of her neighbor's infatuated grandson (Giovanni Ridolfi).

"... Sophia Loren quickens the pulse of a generation." (Roger Ebert)

"Let is be said merely that Miss Loren is a female of dazzling temperament and Mr. Mastroianni is hilarious as a voluptuary, Italian style." (The New York Times)

"... A snappy, satirical comedy that reveals the Italian character both from the upper and lower echelons of society over the course of three lively, sexy, funny anecdotes. De Sica touches on issues like the absurd judicial system (jails crowded with women imprisoned for frivolous offences and now raising kids behind bars), bourgeois hypocrisy, Catholic guilt, and working class camaraderie in the face of bureaucratic indifference." (Letterboxed)

Presented with the generous help and support from our friends at the Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre, Italian Day on the Drive, and the Italian Contemporary Film Festival.

YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW "Ieri, oggi, domani" (Vittorio De Sica, 1963 / 119 mins / PG / Italian with English Subtitles) Stories about three very different women and the men they attract. Adelina sells black-market cigarettes in Naples, is married to the unemployed Carmine, and faces a jail sentence. She can avoid it as long as she's pregnant. Several years and seven children later, Carmine is exhausted, so jail looks inescapable as does her contempt for Carmine. In Milan, Anna drives a Rolls, is bored, and picks up a writer. She talks dreamily of running off with him until he dents her car; that gets her emotional attention. Mara, a Roman call girl, turns the head of a naive seminarian, prompting a run-in with his granny and a vow of abstinence. Mara's fizzy lover from Bologna grows impatient.
