The Little Hours

Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Kate Micucci star as a trio of nuns (think MEAN GIRLS with a fetch habit) in Jeff Baena’s (LIFE AFTER BETH, I HEART HUCKABEES) THE LITTLE HOURS, a ribald romp about a young servant who flees from his master and takes refuge at a convent full of emotionally unstable nuns in the Middle Ages. The film is based on a couple of bawdy tales from Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th century The Decameron.

The nuns (Brie, Plaza, Micucci) lead a simple life in the convent under the not-so-watchful eyes of their mother superior (Molly Shannon) and priest (John C. Reilly). Days are spent chafing at monastic routine, spying on one another – and hurling insults at the handyman who quits. As a replacement, the priest hires Massetto (Dave Franco), who is in hiding after amusing himself with his former master’s wife. The priest introduces him as a deaf-mute to discourage temptation. But as the virile Massetto struggles to maintain his cover, the nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse and wicked revelry. Also starring Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, Jemima Kirke, Lauren Weedman, Paul Reiser.

"The movie is not camp. It’s deliciously deadpan sex farce played by some of the deftest clowns in the English-speaking world." (Vulture)

"The film manages to be both crudely hilarious and bluntly satiric while also establishing sympathetic characters, a sharp contemporary wit, a sly, dry absurdism ... and a "Handmaid's Tale"-like subversiveness." (The Boston Globe)

"A medieval convent comedy for the megaplex crowd, one that dispenses with the notion of nuns as prim-and-proper old maids who spend their days praying." (Variety)

THE LITTLE HOURS (Jeff Baena 2017 / 90 mins / 18A) Medieval nuns Alessandra, Fernanda, and Ginevra lead a simple life in their convent. Their days are spent chafing at monastic routine, spying on one another, and berating the estate's day laborer. After a particularly vicious insult session drives the peasant away, Father Tommasso brings on newly hired hand Massetto, a virile young servant forced into hiding by his angry lord. Introduced to the sisters as a deaf-mute to discourage temptation, Massetto struggles to maintain his cover.
