Lady Macbeth

In 19th century rural England, a young bride (newcomer Florence Pugh, in a star-making turn) who is sold into and then trapped in a loveless marriage to a much older man, discovers an unstoppable desire within herself and enters into a passionate, illicit affair - with a man her own age, who works on the estate. Based on the novella by Nikolai Leskov.

"Imagine Alfred Hitchock directing 'Wuthering Heights'...." (Indiewire)

"Part of this movie’s ticklish nastiness is that at first it isn’t at all clear whether the title character will be the master of doom or its helpmate." (The New York Times)

"William Oldroyd's pristine debut feature slowly reveals a violent moral ambiguity that needles the mind far longer than its polite period-piece trappings suggest." (Variety)

"Movies are games of moral relativism, though, and Lady Macbeth quickly turns its feminist heroine into something far more disturbing." (Vulture)
