The Rio Grind Film Festival: Blade of the Immortal

The Rio Grind Film Festival: Blade of the Immortal

Thursday, November 16 at 6:30pm PST

Legendary (not to mention prolific) Japanese writer-director Takashi Miike has marked his 100th feature (!) as one of his hands-down best - a feast for the eyes, BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL is an utterly sweeping, fantasy-fueled samurai action-adventure epic. Takuya Kimura stars as Manji, a highly skilled samurai warrior who becomes cursed with immortality following a particularly brutal battle. Haunted by the savage murder of his younger sister, Manji knows that only fighting (and killing) evil will regain his soul, and free him from the curse. He finds himself promising to help train a young girl named Rin (Hana Sugisaki) avenge her own parents who were killed by a group of master swordsmen - led by a ruthless warrior named Anotsu (Sôta Fukushi). The mission will change Manji in ways he could never imagine...

"The 100th feature by genre master Takashi Miike transcends conventions of Japanese swordplay films with both fantasy and graphic violence." (Variety)

"Further proof that of all the genres he dabbles in, samurai cinema is the one that brings out the grandest entertainer in Miike. Here's to 100 more." (AV Club)
