Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

6:00pm - Friday, Dec 29, 2017

The world's most beautiful woman was also the secret inventor of secure wifi, bluetooth and GPS communications, but her arresting looks stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved... until now.

Hollywood wild-child, Hedy Lamarr, was infamous for her many marriages and affairs with everyone from Spencer Tracy to JFK. In Alexandra Dean's stunning new documentary portrait BOMBSHELL, Lamarr's very image is re-framed and brought into a modern focus - not only as an actress, but as the brilliant mind who co-invented 1940's wireless technology.

After inventing the movie sex scandal, she married a Nazi collaborator, escaped him, and fled to Hollywood. There, Lamarr became a movie star known as, “the most beautiful woman in the world.” Songs were written about her beauty, Snow White and Cat Woman were modelled on her iconic look. But today, fifteen years after her death, the world has forgotten Hedy Lamarr, the great beauty.... It turns out one-time “most beautiful woman in the world” was also a secret inventor, who in the midst of World War II, used her free time to co-invent a radio-control technology meant for torpedoes - which would ultimately pave the way for secure cell phone communication, WiFi, Bluetooth, and drone warfare. This is the story of what happens when an actress, admired and ridiculed for her wild life, is secretly a genius who changed the world. Featuring the voices of Susan Sarandon and Diane Kruger and interviews with Peter Bogdanovich, Mel Brooks, and more.

"What makes BOMBSHELL intriguing is not just Lamarr's gift for invention, it's also what a fiery individualist she was, someone who had no regrets about her eventful life ("You learn from everything"), not even its racy, tabloid elements." (LA Times)

"Recognition (and compensation) proved elusive in Lamarr's lifetime, but in this marvelous documentary, a brilliant woman - "I'm a very simple, complicated person" - finally gets her due." (Village Voice)

"There are Hollywood biographies, then there are fascinating lives. One of the most beautiful - and arguably the smartest - actresses of all time could certainly claim the latter." (LA Daily News)

BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY (Alexandra Dean, 2017 / 90 mins / PG) Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr fled an oppressive marriage to create a name for herself as one of Hollywood's top leading ladies in the 1940s. Behind the glamour and sex appeal, though, was a talented and inquisitive inventor who created a radio system that is now considered the basis of Bluetooth technology.
