Thoroughbreds

9:30pm - Sunday, Apr 22, 2018

Writer-director Cory Finley's tight (and tart) debut feature is a deliciously wicked tale of female friendship gone thrillingly awry - think HEATHERS meets AMERICAN PSYCHO, by way of Whit Stillman. THOROUGHBREDS benefits greatly from strong performances by its stellar young cast - including Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH, SPLIT), Olivia Cooke (READY PLAYER ONE, ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL) and the late Anton Yelchin (STAR TREK, GREEN ROOM), in one of his final roles.

Treading on slightly familiar territory, THORUGHBREDS follows two childhood friends, Lily (Joy) and Amanda (Cooke), who reconnect in suburban Connecticut after years of growing apart. Lily has turned into a polished upper-class teenager who has a fancy boarding school on her transcript and a coveted internship on her resume. Amanda has developed a sharp wit and her own particular attitude but all in the process of becoming a social outcast. Though they initially seem completely at odds, the pair eventually bond and hatch a plan to solve both of their problems.

"THOROUGHBREDS is not for the faint of heart. It's a psychological thriller that explores what human nature is capable of when drained of all empathy and remorse, surviving instead on practised smiles, crocodile tears and self-serving impulses." (Globe and Mail)

"If you don't mind your movies nasty, brutish, and slight, you couldn't ask for a more delectable chocolate-covered razor blade." (The Wrap)

"Set in the opulent, WASP-y world of teen divas with killer instincts, Cory Finley's deliciously depraved satire skewers an empathy drain that he sees as sadly emblematic of modern life." (Rolling Stone)

"Female friendship has never looked so deliciously dangerous." (Film Inquiry)
